[ARCHIVED] City of Aspen conducts essential repairs on Mill Street bridge

Press Release

City of Aspen conducts essential repairs on Mill Street bridge

Aspen, CO — The city of Aspen will commence critical maintenance work on the Mill Street bridge starting Sept. 3, 2024. The project follows a comprehensive survey conducted earlier this year, which identified a bridge joint in need of repair. This proactive work, while temporarily impactful, will help prevent more significant repairs in the future.

The Mill Street bridge, originally constructed in 1985, will undergo repairs over a six-week period. Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. It is the city’s priority to ensure this work is completed in a timely manner.

Traffic on the Mill Street Bridge will be reduced to a single alternating lane during work hours. Normal traffic patterns will resume after work hours. Pedestrians will experience detours, though the Rio Grande Trail underneath the bridge will remain open.

"We recognize that this work will temporarily impact traffic and pedestrian routes, but it's a necessary step to maintain the safety and integrity of the Mill Street bridge," said Jack Danneberg, civil engineer for the city of Aspen. "By addressing this issue now, we are preventing more significant disruptions in the future."

To minimize the impact on commuters, the city of Aspen encourages residents and visitors to consider alternate modes of transportation, such as bicycles or the city’s free bus system.
