City of Aspen Supports Peaceful Protestors This Weekend

ASPEN, CO. – June 4, 2020 –Two protests have been arranged by private citizens for this weekend at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Paepcke Park.   The City of Aspen and Aspen Police Department want all participants and residents and visitors to know that we support every individuals’ freedom of speech and freedom to assemble.

“We recognize that the nation is experiencing grief and rage and that tensions around racism in America high,” said Richard Pryor, Aspen Police Chief. “The Aspen Police Department is supportive of those who choose to come to Aspen to demonstrate their desire for change.  We will do everything we can to provide a supportive and safe environment and we ask the same from the participants.  As professionals and individuals, all of us in the department recognize that the institutional racism that exists is not to be tolerated and that systemic changes need to be made nationwide.”

The Aspen Police Department will have some officers on the scene to help support the event just like any other large group event in Aspen.
 
Demonstrators are asked to please follow all rules to stop the spread of COVID-19 including wearing a mask, social distancing, and using hand sanitizer.  COVID-19 is still a health threat to our community and all who gather and the City of Aspen and Aspen Police Department want all participants and residents to stay as safe as possible while also expressing their freedom of speech and assembly.
